Evidence for your university or college

A medical letter may help explain how an illness or an existing health condition affected your studies during a particular period. It can support a request for an extension or consideration of exceptional circumstances, where the evidence supports this.

What to check first

  • Check whether your institution allows self-certification before seeking a letter.
  • Ask for the exact evidence requirements and submission deadline.
  • Keep the dates of the affected exam, assessment or absence and relevant medical records.
Your university or college decides whether to accept the evidence and grant an extension or other adjustment. A letter cannot guarantee an academic outcome.

Your questions, answered.

What if my university deadline comes first?

Ask your institution whether it can accept evidence later or an initial explanation while an assessment is pending. We cannot guarantee a document by an academic deadline. Earlier illness requires enough evidence to support a retrospective opinion; a letter’s actual issue date is never altered.

What does the assessment fee include?

The fee includes GP review, a phone or video call if needed for this assessment, and a signed PDF letter if clinically appropriate. Payment does not guarantee a letter. If no letter is issued, the assessment fee is refunded in full.

What if I need a correction?

Contact us with your request reference if you notice an administrative error. One administrative correction is included. New dates, new medical information or a different purpose may require a further assessment; we will explain any fee before you agree.

What happens if my deadline is close?

We review requests as promptly as we can once we have a complete request and payment. Further evidence or a consultation may extend the time to a final decision. We cannot guarantee a letter by your deadline, so please request it in good time.

How are refunds handled?

If no letter is issued, we arrange a full refund to the original payment method and email confirmation. Your payment provider determines when the funds appear in your account. Contact us if you need help tracing a refund.

Can a letter support mitigating or extenuating circumstances?

A GP letter may provide medical evidence for an application about an exam, coursework deadline or absence. Include your institution’s requirements, the affected dates and how your health affected your studies. The institution makes the final decision.

What evidence should I prepare?

Have relevant consultation records, treatment details or other medical evidence available, alongside the assessment dates and the university’s evidence checklist. The GP may ask for more information if the evidence does not support the requested wording.

Can a letter cover an earlier illness?

Only where the GP has sufficient evidence to describe that period accurately. We cannot promise retrospective certification or change the date a letter is issued.

Does this replace the university’s own form?

Not necessarily. Your institution may require a specific form, evidence from your treating clinician, or its own self-certification process.

How do I request one?

Complete the secure identity check, questionnaire and payment. A GP will then review your request.

Clinical judgement comes first.

You will confirm your identity and then complete the medical request form. A GMC-registered GP will assess your information and may request further evidence or a phone or video consultation. A letter will be issued only when clinically appropriate.

Clear expectations, before you start.

A GP reviews each request as promptly as possible. More information or a consultation may be needed before a decision, so we cannot guarantee when a letter will be issued.

If approved, your letter is delivered electronically, with instructions by email. If no letter is issued, you receive a full refund. The £39.99 fee covers this assessment.
